In the field of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), the environmental impact from leaks in storage areas is a source of great concern. This project aims to mitigate the technological gaps, especially in Brazil, when seeking to develop underwater acoustic monitoring technology for CO2 leakage detection and quantification in submarine reservoirs and in infrastructures related to capture transportation and storage. This project has three main topics. The first deals with the study, design, and development of autonomous underwater acoustic monitoring equipment (as well as physical-chemical sensors) with characteristics suitable to cover large areas for long periods of time. The second topic addresses the development of algorithms and software for data processing and analysis of collected signals for leakage visualization and detection. This topic also contemplates the development of mathematical models for numerical simulation of different leakage scenarios. The third topic aims to develop benchmarks and experimental methodologies, in laboratory scale, with the purpose of testing, calibrating, and validating the instrumentation and algorithms developed.
