I started part-time as a Solaris/Apache server admin while still in high school in the 90s, then built to a CS degree, security PhD and spent a few years teaching security at university in the UK before marrying an Iowan and moving to the US together. 25 years on I still seem to be running *nix and Windows servers, mostly for CI pipelines these days - currently on C#/SQL data warehousing and ETL code, but open to change.
