Placement Student
As part of my Thick Sandwich Course in Computer Science at Brunel University London, I was inducted into an industrial placement internship at Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine, engaging in various software related roles and responsibilities, working in multiple departments, obtaining an arsenal of skills and knowledge.

I grew in my python ability from creating and analysing existing test scripts using squish IDE. I developed an understanding of the tester mentality, adopting during my time within the test automation department, learning not to treat bugs as a developer, hence create false positives, but learnt to embrace and diagnose the issues at hand instead. When away from the lab nodes and executing test scripts on the system at my desk, I gained my more experience with VirtualBox, as this was used to emulate the network setup.

I applied knowledge of the agile approach and version control from university whilst part of the software development team. I sat in on daily stand ups, where outstanding tickets in the sprint were addressed, myself informing of status of my assigned tickets. I patched bugs in the system in C# using Visual Studio (amongst other languages), seeking advice from fellow colleagues to better understand the system. Learnt more about the iterative implementation nature of the agile approach, using Collaborator and Tortoise Hg (Mercurial) for reviewing and committing patches respectively.

I gained experience in Linux command line and docker, how to deploy stacks and manage containers in particular, whilst working within Smart Maintenance. I also learnt to how to create different types of servers, such as PXE and SFTP. In reference to PXE, I created a functional Debian Preseed (fully automated) installation. Lastly, I gained a rudimentary knowledge of various deb packages, including ansible, tmux, lvm & xfs.

Initially enrolled onto a foundation year for Computer Science and Maths, then specialisiing into Computer Science in first year. In retrospect, this was a massive bonus, preparing more than those going straight into first year. Enjoying my studies, the comunities I am a part of, and the different people I have had the blessing of meeting. Aiming for 1st
