A technical manager with over 20 years’ experience in financial services technology delivering software solutions and, more recently, a public cloud platform. I have a friendly, calm manner and am keen to mentor and coach technical talent. I am a hands-on engineer at heart who loves to understand the detail but I enjoy seeing the big picture, setting and driving the technical strategy and direction.

Head of GCP Platform Engineering
I manage a team of 15 DevOps engineers which implemented and maintain an enterprise-level cloud platform in GCP. I have responsibility for backlog prioritisation, cost control, vendor liaison and I manage the relationship with internal customers.
The platform is designed to transform application teams to a cloud-native way of working by offering safe and secure adoption of public cloud services using off-the-shelf infrastructure patterns. This gives developers the ability to manage their own infrastructure, at scale, within automated guardrails.
I steer the technical direction of the team, oversee design and code reviews and perform hands-on development. I balance the aim of full self-service with the pragmatic need for fast delivery, low cost and enterprise-level security.

Cloud Adoption and IaC Pipeline - Cloud Platform Engineering
Jan 2019 - Aug 2020 (1 year 7 months)
IaC Pipeline Product Owner

I was responsible for the design and implementation of the IaC pipeline for the NatWest Markets GCP platform using a toolchain comprised of Terraform Enterprise, Hashicorp Vault, Gitlab, Packer and Artifactory.

I implemented an approach where users could provision and operate their own infrastructure and platform setup using a pipeline that is defined in code, automated and self-service. Appropriate guardrails guarantee that the end-to-end pipeline and infrastructure are safe and secure.

I worked with InfoSec and Risk & Controls functions to ensure the IaC pipeline meets all internal and regulatory requirements while remaining largely self-service and agile enough to operate at scale.

I helped to define, implement and promote standard infrastructure patterns used to enable change at scale. Patterns included a project factory, FinOps labelling governance and an IaaS "bakery" where teams could create their own images in a secure, self-service manner.

Head of Cloud Adoption Team

Led a team of 8 senior DevOps engineers driving adoption of the cloud platform through NatWest Markets technology. I on-boarded application teams into the platform and "held hands" to train and guide developers as they adopted Infrastructure-as-Code and cloud-native behaviours.

As head of this team I was the interface between the Platform Engineering team and the bank's application development community and built successful working relationships with senior stakeholders and external vendors.
